Sourcing Melanotan: what to verify

StatusMT-II not FDA approved

PeptideHound Staff · Last editorially reviewed · 15 sources

Melanotan is injected, and nothing sold under that name has a regulator standing behind it, so there is no approved product to hold a grey-market vial up against. That makes it a harder purchase to check than almost anything else covered on this site; we name no seller, carry no prices and rank nobody.

The word itself is part of the problem. Melanotan covers two different compounds, Melanotan-I and Melanotan-II, and a label printing the bare word has identified neither. The FDA enforcement record keeps them apart by strength and container, listing a Melanotan I 200mcg/mL preparation in 1.5 mL and 5 mL vials and a separate Melanotan II 1 mg/mL (10 mL) Injection.

Those enforcement entries are the only melanotan in these sources with a documented origin, and they are not what most buyers are holding. Each names a compounding pharmacy at a street address, each is marked Rx Only, and all three were pulled over sterility rather than over anything about the molecule. A licensed pharmacy under inspection still produced batches a regulator would not stand behind.

Outside that, the published record is a harm record rather than a supply record. Case reports run to melanoma, renal infarction, priapism and ulcerated wounds at injection sites, and a 2018 analytical review names melanotan II among the polypeptides being falsified. None of those cases arrived with a laboratory report on the vial, so each describes a purchase and a compound at the same time.

Evidence: 3 FDA enforcement entries, all compounded and prescription-only · 1 analytical review naming melanotan II among falsified polypeptides · no published analysis of retail melanotan contents among the research behind this page · no evaluation of sellers in these sources

Can you order Melanotan 2 online?

human case report

Listings are easy to find, and the medical literature has described them for more than a decade without naming one. A 2021 urology case report calls Melanotan II illicitly available on the internet to generate a sunless tan through melanocyte induction.1 The same report adds that it is also used as a sexual stimulant in unlicensed performance enhancement clinics.1 A 2019 British case report puts it more flatly, saying melanocortin analogues, such as melanotan, are illegally used for artificial tanning2. Availability, then, is not the open question and never was. The open question is what sits inside a particular vial, and this page is a list of the few ways a buyer can narrow that down.

Is Melanotan 2 available for sale in the UK?

review

Britain is where the injectable tanning market first took shape, and a 2025 history explains the gap it grew into. In Britain, medical experts and the media attempted to curtail overall sunbed use but failed.3 A UV-free alternative was then marketed into a public already worried about skin cancer. British dermatology journals carry several of the case reports behind this page, which tells a reader the compound circulates there and tells them nothing about a lawful route to it.4 Nothing in these sources names a licensed UK supplier or describes a regulated channel in any country. That is an absence in the published record rather than a conclusion about UK law, and the two should not be run together.

Can you buy Melanotan II in Australia?

human case report

The Australian dermatology literature contributes to this record rather than to a list of sellers. A 2012 report in an Australasian journal states, we report a case of melanotan-associated melanoma in situ, in a patient who had used the injections.4 Reports of the same kind come from the Netherlands, Britain and Scandinavia, and a 2022 Dutch paper notes that the material changes hands over the internet and in gyms5. Put those together and the geography is clear enough. The compound moves between countries through channels that leave no regulatory paper behind them, which is why a page like this one can describe methods and cannot describe suppliers. Whether a purchase is lawful in Australia is a question for Australian statute, and no source behind this page answers it.

Is Melanotan 2 over the counter?

review

There is a retail tanning shelf, and melanotan is not on it. A 2026 review went and looked at one. The top 50 sunless tanners on Amazon's Best Sellers list (March 2025) were reviewed, and of the ones that qualified, all products contained dihydroxyacetone (DHA).6 That is a sugar which browns the dead outer layer of skin and never enters the bloodstream. Melanotan appears in the same review on the far side of a line, where emerging or less common agents such as troxerutin, melanotan, and melanoidins raise safety and regulatory concerns.6 So the counter sells a cosmetic. An injection ordered online is a different transaction, with a different regulator standing behind it, and in this case there is none standing behind it at all.

Is a Melanotan nasal spray on sale?

human pilot / early trial

Sprays are listed by sellers, and every presentation with a documented history is an injection. The 1996 pilot gave its volunteers subcutaneous injections of MT-II or saline were given daily (Monday-Friday) for 2 consecutive weeks.7 The enforcement record holds injections too, down to the container: one entry reads Melanotan II 1 mg/mL (10 mL) Injection, 10mL vials, Rx only8. So a spray is a format with no documented counterpart in these sources. For a buyer the consequence is narrow and concrete. A strength printed in milligrams per millilitre was worked out for material pushed under the skin, and it cannot be read across to a measured number of puffs through the nose. What a sprayed amount actually delivers is taken up at the Melanotan results page.

Which of the two molecules is in the vial?

review

Melanotan is a name shared by two compounds, so a label carrying it alone identifies neither of them. A 1998 paper is titled Discovery and development of novel melanogenic drugs. Melanotan-I and -II, which is the pair of them side by side.11 The FDA enforcement record keeps them properly apart. One entry reads Melanotan I 200mcg/mL (2mg/ml), a) 1.5mL-vial, b) 5 mL-vial.9 Another covers a Melanotan II 1 mg/mL (10 mL) Injection.8 Those are different molecules, at different strengths, in differently sized containers. A listing or a certificate that prints only the bare word has not said which of the two was made or tested, and a buyer cannot supply the missing half from context. What separates the two molecules is set beside their evidence at the Melanotan comparison page.

Which melanotan has a named maker behind it?

regulatory action

Exactly one kind, and it is not the kind most buyers meet. Three Class II recalls sit in the FDA enforcement record, and each one names a compounding pharmacy at a street address. One names Promise Pharmacy Compounding Specialists 31818 US Hwy 19N, Palm Harbor, FL 34684.10 Another names Farmakeio 1736 N Greenville Ave Richardson, TX 75081 USA.8 The third names Tailor Made Compounding.9 Each entry also carries two words no web listing prints, which are Rx Only.10 That material was made against a prescription, by a licensed pharmacy, at an address anybody can look up. It is the only melanotan in these records with a traceable origin. It is also, as it happens, the only melanotan in these records that a regulator ever examined.

What did the three recalls actually fault?

regulatory action

Not the molecule, and that distinction matters to a purchase. All three entries fault the way a batch was made. The Palm Harbor entry gives the reason as Lack of sterility assurance.10 The Melanotan I entry gives it as Lack of Assurance of Sterility.9 Read what is being said there. A licensed pharmacy, working under inspection, with written procedures and an inspector who could walk in, still turned out batches a regulator would not stand behind. The same entry prints one more instruction worth copying down, the single word Refrigerate.9 Storage is part of a specification rather than advice, and a parcel that spent four warm days in transit has left that specification without anybody writing it down.

What is there to compare a vial against?

review

Nothing, and that is the structural difference between melanotan and most compounds on this site. Where a molecule has an approved version, a buyer can hold a grey-market vial beside a filed standard. Then they can count what is missing. Here no approved melanotan preparation exists in the records covered here, so there is no standard to hold it beside. A 2018 review describes what fills the space instead. Unauthorized polypeptides or polypeptides which failed clinical trials or are still subject of clinical or pre-clinical assessments have been found in seizures of regulatory agencies.12 Melanotan sits in that line rather than in the approved column. The usual comparison is simply not on offer. A reader is left checking a piece of paper against itself.

What can a certificate of analysis establish here?

review

Identity and purity, for one batch, on one day, which on this compound is narrower than it sounds. The identity half runs straight into the problem above, because melanotan names two molecules and a certificate has to say which one went into the instrument. The purity half runs into the falsification literature. A 2018 review states that end-users have no guarantee of the safety and efficacy of these preparations, which is a statement about the whole unregulated channel rather than about any one seller.12 A certificate commissioned and supplied by the seller does not alter that sentence, because the document and the material come from the same place. What would alter it is a laboratory the buyer chose, testing a sample the buyer sent. No source covered here describes anybody doing that for retail melanotan.

Is melanotan counterfeited?

review

Yes, and the record says so directly while refusing to say how often. A 2018 review reports that biotechnology drugs (synthetic peptide drugs and protein drugs) have been reported to be prone for falsifications.12 Melanotan II is named in its list, where next to the traditional doping related substances and image-enhancing polypeptides (e.g., human growth hormone, melanotan II) also essential medicines such as insulin, oxytocin and monoclonal antibodies have been falsified.12 Being named on that list is worth knowing. What it does not supply is a rate, because the review counted what regulators seized rather than what sellers shipped. A seizure total has no denominator, so it cannot be turned into odds for the next parcel, and a reader who treats it as odds has invented a number nobody measured.

Does the case record belong to the compound or the vial?

human case report

To both at once, and no published case pulls them apart. That is a limit on the medicine and a fact about sourcing at the same time. A 2025 report describes a 65-year-old woman reported utilising Melanotan and subsequently developing ulcerated wounds at the injection sites on her abdomen.13 An injection site is precisely where a sterility or contamination problem would announce itself, and precisely where a direct effect of the molecule would announce itself too. Every case in this literature reached a clinic without any laboratory report on the vial behind it. Each one therefore documents a purchase and a compound together, and cannot be read as a property of the molecule on its own. The documented effects are gathered one by one at the Melanotan safety page.

Does a recruiting trial mean a product is coming?

registered trial

One study appears in the public registry, listed as Melanotan II (MT-II) as an Adjunct to NB-UVB Phototherapy for Repigmentation in Stable Nonsegmental Vitiligo.14 NB-UVB is a narrow band of ultraviolet light used in hospital skin clinics, and vitiligo is a loss of pigment in patches. Read what that registration is, and what it is not. It is a hospital study of a tanning peptide used alongside a light treatment, for a diagnosed condition, under supervision, and it has reported nothing so far. It is not a product launch. Material used inside a trial is made to a written specification that no retail vial shares, so a seller quoting the registration is quoting somebody else's study rather than a credential of their own.

What can a buyer actually check?

review

Four things, none of which proves what is in the glass, and each of which can rule a purchase out on its own. First, which molecule the certificate names, since the two compounds have separate records. Second, whether the batch number on the certificate matches the number on the vial, because a mismatch makes the document irrelevant. Third, whether the laboratory named on it will confirm in writing that it issued the report. Fourth, how the listing talks about risk, which is more informative than it looks. A 2022 review of online misinformation found that one recurring theme was the promotion of tanning and Melanotan (an unlicensed and untested form of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) as safe practices.15 Anyone can also search the FDA enforcement database free of charge and read the three melanotan entries in full.9

What we could not verify

The open questions deserve naming, because a sourcing page that quietly fills them in becomes the thing it is warning about. We could find no analysis among the research behind this page that opens a vial sold online under this name and reports its identity, strength or purity. No register connects a trading name to a manufacturing site, and nothing obliges a seller to name one. We could find no comparison of sellers by any journal, agency or register, so a ranking on this page would be invention. How often a counterfeit reaches a buyer is unmeasured, since the published figures count seizures. Whether a certificate handed over is genuine can only be settled by the laboratory named on it. What the two molecules have actually been measured to do sits at the Melanotan overview.

What we don’t know

The gaps in the evidence matter as much as the findings.

  1. 01What is inside a vial sold online under this name. No analysis among the research behind this page reports its identity, strength or purity, which leaves it unmeasured rather than acceptable.
  2. 02Which of the two molecules a given vial holds. A label printing the bare word settles nothing, and only a certificate naming the compound can narrow it.
  3. 03How often falsified material reaches a buyer. The published figures count what regulators seized, and a seizure total carries no denominator.
  4. 04Who manufactures retail melanotan. No register links a trading name to a site, and nothing requires a seller to name one.
  5. 05Whether one seller is more reliable than another. Among the research behind this page, no study, agency or register compares them.
  6. 06What a vial has been through in transit. One enforcement entry prints Refrigerate on the label, and nothing records what happens when that is ignored.
  7. 07Whether a certificate shown to a buyer is genuine. Only the laboratory named on it can confirm that, and an unanswered email settles nothing either way.
