Sourcing HCG: what to verify

StatusPrescription medicine

PeptideHound Staff · Last editorially reviewed · 17 sources

hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a prescription medicine in the United States, and the only purchase with a documented record behind it is a pharmacy filling a prescription. We name no seller and rank none, and what this page gives instead is what a label, a recall search and a certificate can and cannot confirm.

The documented supply is visible through its failures. Ten FDA recalls of compounded hCG sit on the enforcement record, every listing marked Rx only, and each one names a strength, a form and a pharmacy. One was filed for mold found in a prefilled syringe, and another because nobody had tested how much hormone the vials held.

Outside the pharmacy route, nothing has been examined that a reader can check. No analysis among the research behind this page reports the identity, strength or sterility of hCG sold online as a peptide or for a diet, and a home pregnancy strip was built to detect the hormone in urine rather than to measure a vial.

The approved labelling itself is not among the sources behind this page. So the conditions hCG is prescribed for are attributed here to the clinical literature, and none of them is weight loss or muscle.

Evidence: No published ranking or evaluation of hCG sellers exists among the research behind this page · 10 FDA recalls of compounded hCG covering sterility, mold, potency, solvent and dating · no analysis of identity, strength or sterility for hCG obtained outside a pharmacy

Where can you get hCG for men?

review

Two routes exist, and only one of them has left a record anybody can read. The first is a pharmacy dispensing against a prescription. A 2020 review of men making too little testosterone sets out the evidence on hCG beside testosterone itself and two other kinds of hormone-modifying medicine.1 That places hCG for men inside a clinic, prescribed against a diagnosis by somebody who has measured the problem first. The enforcement record shows what that route dispenses, for example a freeze-dried vial of 5,500 USP Units for injection, marked Rx Only.2 The second route is everything offered under the letters hCG by anybody else, often labelled as a peptide. No source among the research behind this page describes what sits inside any of it, which leaves it unexamined rather than examined and found wanting.

Is a particular online hCG seller legit?

regulatory action

We do not answer that for any named seller, and a page that does is offering an opinion presented as a finding. Among the research behind this page, no study, agency or register evaluates hCG sellers, so there is nothing published to report; what remains possible is verification, and the same three checks apply identically to every name. The first is a search of the business name against the FDA enforcement record. The second is a certificate of analysis carrying the batch number printed on the vial in your possession, and the third is confirmation from the laboratory named on that certificate that it actually issued it. The records show what a searchable listing looks like, one of them ending in the code NDC: 69699-1738-10.3 An NDC is a national drug code, the identifier a regulated presentation carries. A seller offering no code, no batch number and no registered street address has supplied nothing that verification could start from, and that absence is itself the information.

What does a lawful purchase of hCG look like?

systematic review

It looks like a prescription written for a diagnosis, filled by a pharmacy, in a vial carrying a label. Every hCG listing in the enforcement file carries the same status. One entry reads Human Chorionic Gonadotropin 3000 IU, Rx only, followed by a pharmacy and a phone number.3 The diagnoses come from the clinical literature rather than from a label, because the approved labelling is not among the sources behind this page. One is the trigger injection in IVF, where a 2025 analysis pooled trials comparing hCG with other ways of ripening eggs in women undergoing ovarian stimulation.4 Another is undescended testicles in boys, and a third is low testosterone in men. None of them is weight loss, muscle or sport, so a purchase made for any of those sits outside every use the published record describes.

Is pharmacy hCG the same as compounded hCG?

regulatory action

Not quite, and every hCG recall behind this page concerns the second kind. A compounding pharmacy makes up a preparation itself instead of dispensing a manufacturer's finished preparation. That is still a regulated pharmacy, and it still answers to the FDA. One recall lists a compounded vial as Human Chorionic Gonadotropin 5,500 USP Units For injection, Rx Only, Compounded by a pharmacy in Texas.2 That listing was recalled for Lack of Sterility Assurance.2 So the regulated supply itself has failed on sterility several times, at several pharmacies, across several years. That does not make compounded hCG worse than material bought elsewhere. It means only the compounded kind has been inspected closely enough to fail in public, and material bought elsewhere has not been inspected at all.

What should the label on an hCG vial carry?

regulatory action

The enforcement listings make a working template, because the agency recorded what each presentation carried. One reads Human Chorionic Gonadotropin 2,500 Units, Vial-Lyophilized, For SC Use, Rx Only, with the firm's name and street address after it.5 Lyophilized means freeze-dried to a powder that is mixed with liquid before use, and SC means subcutaneous, under the skin. Six fields recur across the listings: the compound, the amount, the form, the route, the prescription status, and an identifiable firm at a real address. Some add a national drug code that can be searched. A vial arriving without a lot number, without a stated amount or without a business behind the trading name is missing fields that every documented hCG presentation carried. That absence is checkable in a way that a claim about purity is not.

Why do hCG labels say IU, USP Units or just units?

regulatory action

Because hCG strength is stated in units rather than in milligrams, and the labels on file word those units differently. One compounded vial is labelled in USP Units, at 5,500 USP Units for injection.2 Another listing gives its strength in IU, at 125 IU HCG in a 0.5 ml syringe.6 A third gives only units, at 125 units per 0.1 mL drop in a 5 mL bottle.7 IU stands for international units. Whether two labels using different terminology describe an identical quantity of hormone is a question for the firm that wrote them, and no source among the research behind this page settles it. The conclusion available to a reader is narrower: a number printed on a label belongs to that particular label, and an unlabelled vial offers no unit to which any number could be attached.

What forms is hCG sold in?

regulatory action

Three presentations appear on the enforcement record, they are not interchangeable, and the majority are freeze-dried powder supplied in a vial. The vial strengths on file include 5,000 IU and 12,000 IU, both from one Texas pharmacy.89 One entry is a ready-filled syringe, described as Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, 125 IU HCG, in 0.5 ml syringe, subcutaneous administration, Rx only.6 The third is an oral drop, listed as HCG 125 units per 0.1 mL drop in a 5 mL bottle, Rx only.7 All three were prescription presentations, and every one of them was recalled. The clinical studies behind this site used injections, so a drop and an injection represent different exposures. Nothing in the research behind this page measures what an oral drop delivers into the blood.

What does a beyond-use date mean on an hCG vial?

regulatory action

It is the date after which a compounded preparation should not be used, set by the pharmacy that made it rather than by a manufacturer. Two hCG recalls turned on that date being wrong. The listings for 2,500 Units and 6,000 iu vials were filed for incorrect or missing lot and expiry information.510 The stated problem was that the Beyond Use Date exceeded the expiry date of at least one ingredient used to make the final preparation.5 Put plainly, the label promised the preparation would last longer than one of its own ingredients. That is an error no buyer could have detected, discovered through regulatory inspection rather than through anyone noticing a problem, and it is a reason to read every date on a label as a claim made by whoever printed it.

regulatory action

The agency publishes its enforcement reports in a searchable database, free to use. Searching the compound name returns whatever has been filed about it, and searching a firm's name returns whatever has been filed against that firm. For hCG the record behind this page holds ten entries filed between 2014 and 2020, at six pharmacies, each carrying a reason. One of them was filed for Non-sterility: presence of mold confirmed by outside laboratory at the 14 day culture.6 Others were filed for Lack of Sterility Assurance, among them a 12,000 IU vial.9 Two cautions accompany any search of this kind. A recall identifies the firm that manufactured the preparation rather than every business that subsequently resold it, and a name missing from the database represents only an absence, which does not establish that anything was ever examined.

What does a certificate of analysis establish for hCG?

review

A certificate of analysis is a laboratory report on one batch, and for hCG it has a specific job to do. One recall was filed for CGMP deviations, meaning failures of the manufacturing standards, because of a lack of potency testing.11 Potency is the quantity of active hormone a vial actually contains, and that recall demonstrates it can go unmeasured even inside a licensed pharmacy. A certificate is intended to close that gap for a single batch, and its limitations matter as much as its contents. hCG is not one fixed molecule either, since a 2022 review counts four major isoforms of it.12 An isoform is a variant of the hormone built slightly differently, so a report has to say what it measured and how. A certificate does not establish that its sample came out of the batch you hold, and it says nothing about sterility unless a sterility test is listed on it.

Can a pregnancy test check what is in an hCG vial?

primary research

It was not built to, and the published work on those strips shows why. A 2011 paper describes the modified commercial strip test for human chorionic gonadotropin as the test for the hormone used to detect pregnancy.13 A 2025 group reported that reading such a strip by phone video reached a sensitivity of 92.7% and a specificity of 99.1%.14 Those figures describe how reliably a strip identifies hCG in a sample at the concentrations it was designed for, which is a different task from measuring strength. A line indicates the hormone is present above a threshold and provides no reading of how many units a vial contains. Nor does it indicate anything about sterility, the failure behind most of the recalls described on this page, so a positive strip answers a considerably smaller question than the one a buyer is asking.

How is hCG actually measured in a laboratory?

primary research

With a quantitative immunoassay, a test that uses antibodies to count the hormone rather than just detect it. A 2020 study developed one combined method and tested it on 130 clinical samples against an existing commercial assay.15 Its limit of detection was 0.33 mIU/mL and its upper limit of quantification was 11,300 mIU/mL.15 Those numbers describe blood and urine work in a hospital laboratory, and they show the scale of the job. A test like this has a stated range it can read, running from its detection limit up to its upper limit of quantification. None of the studies covered here applied such an assay to a vial bought outside a pharmacy. So measured strength is something a laboratory can produce for a batch, rather than something anyone has published for that supply.

Is hCG sold for weight loss the same thing?

review

It may share the name and nothing else that can be confirmed. Keep three uses apart: a prescription for a fertility or hormone diagnosis, a clinician prescribing outside that diagnosis, and a diet regimen sold to the public. A 2012 toxicology review lists human chorionic gonadotropin hormone among dieting agents reviewed for potential toxicity because of their availability through internet sales.16 That review is about harm rather than about what the material contained. Nothing among the research behind this page establishes what a diet seller actually ships, whether hCG at all, at what strength, or in what solvent. The only oral hCG on the enforcement record was itself a prescription preparation. It was recalled for incorrect or undeclared excipients, because it was compounded with an incorrect solvent.7 An excipient is the inactive part of a preparation, and a wrong one was found even there.

What we could not verify

human pilot / early trial

We do not buy, test or assay anything, so nothing on this page describes a vial on sale today. No analysis among the research behind this page reports the identity, strength or sterility of hCG obtained outside a pharmacy, which leaves that question unmeasured rather than settled. We hold no record connecting trading names outside the regulated supply to whoever makes the material. We cannot establish whether a certificate you were shown is genuine, though the laboratory named on it can. We carry no prices, because none appears in any study or register behind this page. One further gap sits underneath the rest. Every hCG figure for men on this site came from material given under a protocol, such as hCG at three dose concentrations of 400, 2000 and 4000 IU in a stimulation test.17 A certificate can tell you what is in a vial. It cannot move a study result onto it.

What we don’t know

The gaps in the evidence matter as much as the findings.

  1. 01What is inside hCG sold outside a pharmacy, as a peptide or for a diet. No analysis among the research behind this page reports its identity, strength or sterility.
  2. 02Whether any seller is more reliable than another. No study, agency or register among the research behind this page evaluates them.
  3. 03Whether IU, USP Units and plain units on different labels describe the same quantity. Only the firm that printed a label can answer that for its own label.
  4. 04What an oral hCG drop delivers into the blood. The clinical work behind this site used injections.
  5. 05What hCG costs. Pricing appears in no study and no register behind this page.
  6. 06Whether a certificate shown to a buyer is genuine. Only the laboratory named on it can confirm that.
  7. 07What the approved labelling says. The regulatory documents behind this page are recall records, which establish prescription status but not the wording of an indication.
