Sourcing MK-677: what to verify

StatusNot approved

PeptideHound Staff · Last editorially reviewed · 15 sources

MK-677 (ibutamoren) is bought as a capsule or a dropper bottle rather than a vial: a small molecule swallowed by mouth, not a peptide drawn into a syringe, so sterility and reconstitution barely arise. What does arise is whether a bottle holds the molecule named on it, in the amount named, and nothing besides.

Laboratories have already opened bottles of this kind and weighed what was inside. A 2017 analysis in JAMA bought 44 items marketed online in the performance category, and in that sample the amount of the compounds listed on the label differed substantially from that found by analysis in 26 of 44 products. Four of the 44 held no active compound at all, and seventeen held an unapproved compound that the label never mentioned, ibutamoren among them. This page names no seller, carries no prices and ranks nothing.

The second thing a buyer acquires is a detection record. Anti-doping laboratories have spent a decade mapping how ibutamoren breaks down, first in horses and then in people, and a 2026 hair analysis found a single 10 mg exposure still registering four weeks later. For anybody who competes under testing, that question is closed before the parcel arrives.

It is not an approved medicine in the regulatory records covered here, and no agency publishes a list of acceptable sellers for it. Two registered studies are listed as completed and the same molecule is in paediatric development under another name. None of that puts a documented manufacturer behind a bottle bought online.

Evidence: 2 published analyses of retail contents (44 products, 2017; 60 supplements, 2021) · 1 five-year European surveillance exercise, 324 samples across 13 countries · no evaluation of individual sellers among the research behind this page · no published price in these sources

What does MK-677 for sale actually look like?

review

Almost every other research compound covered on this site arrives as a powder sealed in a glass vial. Ibutamoren does not. A 2018 review of this class calls it the orally available small-molecule drug ibutamoren mesylate7, and a 1998 review of the same family groups it with nonpeptidyl mimetics, such as the spiroindoline derivative MK-6778. A buyer meets it as a capsule, a tablet or a flavoured liquid in a dropper bottle. One published description of the packaging is unusually concrete, because a 2026 hair study followed a man who worked through 60 capsules at 10 mg (whole vial) across three months6. The unit on sale is a fixed run of oral doses. That removes the two questions people ask about an injectable and leaves the harder one, since nothing about a sealed capsule is visible from the outside of it.

Did the bottle hold what the label said?

primary research

This is the one question a laboratory has already answered for material in this category. In 2017 a team bought 44 items advertised online as muscle-building compounds and analysed every one. Of the 44 tested products, no active compound was detected in 4 (9%) and substances not listed on the label were contained in 11 (25%).1 The amount of the compounds listed on the label differed substantially from that found by analysis in 26 of 44 products (59%).1 Ibutamoren sits on the other side of the same ledger, because an additional 17 products (39%) contained another unapproved drug, including the growth hormone secretagogue ibutamoren1. What that means for a purchase is specific. The wording on a bottle and the contents of a bottle were two separate facts across most of that sample, and the mismatch ran in both directions at once.

What turned up in material seized across Europe?

primary research

A second body of evidence comes from medicines regulators rather than from people shopping online. Over five years a European working group on falsified medicines ran a check on muscle-building compounds. In total 324 samples and 354 results, reported by 14 laboratories in 13 countries, members of the GEON, were taken into account.2 Eighteen different molecules, within the scope of the study, were reported with as top 5: ibutamoren.2 In plain terms, it came up more often than anything else they looked for. On strength the European finding is blunter than the American one. The majority of the samples contain active doses and some are even overdosed, so health risks for the consumers cannot be neglected.2 So the two surveys point opposite ways, and that clash is itself the useful fact. What sits in front of a buyer cannot be guessed from the kind of shop it came from.

Is MK-677 sold on Amazon or eBay?

primary research

People search the large marketplaces for it, and the research behind this page records no storefront names. What it does record is how this material is dressed when somebody finds it. Sixty-five percent of the seized products were represented as medicine, though 24% as dietary supplements, which is of concern because here the (recreational) sporter is not aware he is taking an (unapproved) pharmaceutical.2 A quarter of what European regulators seized was dressed as the sort of thing a shopper files beside a vitamin. A 2021 screening study came at this from the retail end, applying a validated method to 60 dietary supplements obtained by on-line and direct purchase from international vendors in 20203. In those bottles, MK-677 and YK-11, not disclosed on the label, were detected in some products.3 The shelf a listing sits on therefore describes a marketing decision rather than the contents of the capsule.

Can you buy MK-677 in a shop near you?

human RCT

Nothing among the research behind this page describes a shop counter or a pharmacy shelf carrying ibutamoren, and the published purchases describe a different route entirely. Web-based searches were performed from February 18, 2016, to March 25, 2016, using the Google search engine on the Chrome and Internet Explorer web browsers to identify suppliers selling selective androgen receptor modulators.1 That is how the 2017 sample was built. The one place where somebody received a documented preparation is a clinical trial, and a two-year study in 65 older adults ran on oral administration of MK-677, 25 mg, or placebo once daily9. A trial pharmacy and a web listing are not two versions of one supply chain. Only the first leaves a batch record an outsider can read.

How much is a bottle of MK-677?

human RCT

No price for ibutamoren appears anywhere among the sources behind this page, and that is a genuine limit rather than an oversight. Prices live on listings instead of in journals or regulatory registers, and they move from one week to the next. What the literature supplies is the shape of the unit a price is attached to. Published human work ran on steady daily amounts over weeks or years: a 1998 trial in obese men treated with MK-677 25 mg (n = 12) or placebo (n = 12) daily for 8 weeks10, and a 2022 case report describing a man who ingested LGD-4033 (10 mg) and MK-677 (15 mg) daily for 5 weeks11. A bottle is priced against a course of that shape. The only comparison between two listings that carries information is cost per milligram across a stated number of capsules, and the figure on the front of a listing is not that number.

Who manufactures the ibutamoren inside a bottle?

human pilot / early trial

No listing covered here names a plant or a factory, and the published analyses did not find one either. The European exercise says only that the majority of the samples originated from illegal distribution2. A chain of custody that stops there cannot be followed any further back. Set beside it the same molecule with a sponsor standing behind it. Under the name LUM-201, ibutamoren is an orally administered GH secretagogue receptor agonist under development for treatment of pediatric growth hormone deficiency (PGHD)12, meaning a child whose pituitary makes too little growth hormone. That work drew on 68 pediatric subjects participating in a trial for growth hormone deficiency.12 It has a named sponsor, a filed protocol and batch records behind each dose. A bottle bought online has none of the three. One supply can be traced back to a factory and the other cannot be traced at all, which is a difference in kind rather than in degree.

What can a certificate of analysis settle for a capsule?

primary research

It can settle identity and quantity, for one batch, on the day a laboratory looked, and that is the whole of it. For an oral small molecule those are the right two numbers to want, because the failures on record are identity and quantity failures rather than contamination of a sterile fluid. The 2017 analysis shows how that check is done properly, since the identities of the compounds and their amounts were determined from April to August 2016 using chain-of-custody and World Anti-Doping Association-approved analytical procedures1. Two parts of that sentence carry the weight. A chain of custody records who held the sample between the shelf and the instrument, and an approved procedure fixes the method so a second laboratory can repeat it. A certificate commissioned by the seller has neither, which does not make it false. It makes it a document about material no independent party ever handled.

What does a proper identity test look like?

primary research

A certificate names instruments, and most readers cannot judge what those names are worth. It helps to see a real test described. A 2021 paper built a method to screen and quantify six SARMs in dietary supplements.3 Notice that the method was developed and validated simultaneously, and notice that a second machine checked the first, with confirmation by liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS).3 Strip the long names away and the idea is simple. One instrument pulls a mixture apart, and the other weighs each part that comes out. Together they report what is there and how much of it. A certificate with one run, one machine, no validation line and no second method is saying far less. Whether what it says is true is a different question again, and nobody outside that laboratory can answer it.

Is liquid MK-677 the same as the capsule?

review

A dropper bottle and a capsule each raise one extra question, and these sources settle neither of them directly. What they do settle is that the molecule works when it is swallowed. A 1998 review reports that the GH-releasing activity of GHS is marked, dose related and reproducible after intravenous, subcutaneous, intranasal and even oral administration8. Every human trial covered here gave it by mouth. A liquid adds a step that a capsule does not have. The number that matters becomes milligrams per millilitre, not milligrams per capsule, and a dropper is a cruder measure than a moulded shell. None of the analyses covered here split liquids from capsules when they reported what was inside. So the label record belongs to the whole category at once. A reader cannot assume that one form of it came out better than the other.

Does MK-677 need mixing, water or a fridge?

animal model

These questions dominate most sourcing pages on this site. Here they largely fall away. A 2021 paper calls ibutamoren a potent, long-acting, selective and orally active non-peptide growth hormone secretagogue.5 A non-peptide that is swallowed whole is not mixed with water, not drawn into a syringe and not pushed through skin. Sterility, the fault behind most recalls of compounded injections, has no clear way into a sealed capsule. What replaces it is a storage question these sources do not take up for retail bottles, next to an identity question they take up at length. That is a different risk rather than a smaller one. A sterility fault shows up in the end as an infection somebody notices. A wrong molecule, or a wrong amount of the right one, shows up as nothing at all. That is exactly why it has to be measured instead of watched for.

What does buying it mean for a drug test?

animal model

For a reader who competes under anti-doping rules, this part of the purchase is already decided, and it is decided against them. Two laboratories have published detection work aimed squarely at this molecule. In thoroughbred horses given it by mouth, the major metabolites can be detected up to 96 hours after a single dose, and ibutamoren can persist for up to 72 hours4. A 2021 companion paper on equine liver preparations states its purpose without decoration, saying that the reported data help in the speedy detection of the growth hormone secretagogue ibutamoren and reveal its illegal use in competitive sports5. In people the window stretches much further, because hair preserves a record that blood does not. A 2026 analysis found that the 0 to 4 cm hair segment of a user for enhancement of athletic performances tested positive at 224 pg/mg6. Four centimetres of hair is roughly four months of history, and nothing attached to a bottle alters that arithmetic.

Is a particular MK-677 seller legitimate?

primary research

Readers arrive with a brand name in the query, wanting a yes or a no. This page will not supply one, and the reason is not caution. Among the research behind this page there is no study, register or agency assessment that measures sellers of this compound against one another1, so a ranking published here would be an opinion wearing the clothes of a finding rather than a check that anybody could repeat. What can be done is narrower and more useful. Ask for a certificate naming the laboratory, the batch and the date, then write to that laboratory and ask whether it issued the report. If it never answers, the certificate stays where it started, a document naming a laboratory with no independent word that the laboratory wrote it. A seller who cannot produce a batch-matched certificate has answered already, and one who can has answered only half.

Is there an approved version of ibutamoren anywhere?

registered trial

Not among the regulatory records covered here, and the development history explains why the question keeps returning. The compound entered human trials in the mid-1990s and never quite left them. Two registered studies sit in the public trial registry. One covers Body Composition and Functional Ability of Older Adults and is listed as COMPLETED.14 The other, The Impact of Ibutamoren on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, meaning fat accumulating inside liver cells, is listed as completed as well.15 A 2025 review of growth hormone care in children adds that preliminary data are presented on the use of an oral growth hormone secretagogue, ibutamoren, in children with partial GH deficiency13. None of that attaches a regulator to a bottle offered for sale. An approval, when one is eventually granted, belongs to a single named preparation from a single named maker, and it does not travel across to a different capsule carrying the same chemical name on its label.

What we could not verify

primary research

The things a buyer would most like settled are the ones the public record leaves open. Listing them is more honest than quietly filling them in. We could find no analysis among the research behind this page that opens a bottle bought from a named seller and reports the identity, strength and purity of what is inside under that seller's name. The measurements that do exist were made on pooled samples and on seizures, so they describe a category rather than a supplier.2 We could find no register that connects a trading name to a factory, and no agency that publishes a list of acceptable sources for an unapproved compound. Storage, shelf life and what a capsule holds after a year in a warm room go unaddressed in these sources. Where the evidence stops is where this page stops; the wider trial record sits at the MK-677 overview.

What we don’t know

The gaps in the evidence matter as much as the findings.

  1. 01What is inside any single bottle on sale. The analyses among the research behind this page measured pooled retail samples and seizures, which describes a category and not a supplier.
  2. 02Who manufactures retail ibutamoren. No public register connects a trading name to a factory, and nothing obliges a seller to name one.
  3. 03Whether one seller is more reliable than another. Among the research behind this page, no study, agency or register compares them, so the question has no published answer.
  4. 04What a bottle costs anywhere. Pricing is commercial information and it appears in none of the studies or registers cited here.
  5. 05How a capsule behaves in storage. Shelf life, heat and humidity are unaddressed for retail bottles in these sources.
  6. 06Whether a certificate shown to a buyer is genuine. Only the laboratory named on it can confirm that, and an unanswered enquiry settles nothing in either direction.
  7. 07What proportion of the supply has ever been measured. Two published analyses and one five-year European exercise is the whole of it among the sources behind this page.
